Newsflash: The Co-operative membership joins the BUAV’s Campaign for Cruelty Free Cleaning

If you want to go cruelty free then this is the place to start!

What is Go Cruelty Free all about?

Many people are unaware that hundreds of thousands of animals across the world still endure painful experiments to test cosmetics, toiletries, household products and their ingredients. We aim to drive animal testing out of the cosmetics and household products industries altogether.

In 1996 an international coalition of animal protection groups from Europe and North America, including the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) launched the world's only internationally recognised scheme that enables consumers to easily identify and purchase cruelty free products. In the UK this scheme is known as:

1. The Humane Cosmetics Standard (HCS)

A company approved by the HCS, or Leaping Bunny scheme no longer conducts or commissions animal testing for its cosmetics and toiletries products.

2. The Humane Household Products Standard (HHPS)

A company approved by the HHPS, or Leaping Bunny scheme no longer conducts or commissions animal testing for its household products.

Household products include a whole range of items including bleach, washing-up liquid, laundry detergent, furniture polish and air freshener.

How do I go cruelty free?

It's easy! Consumers can help by buying cruelty free products. Some of the UK's leading high street retailers are approved under the HCS and/or HHPS so it's now easier than ever to buy products which are not tested on animals.

Companies can help by joining the Standard.
